    Google Vs Microsoft

Interesting theories floating around the cyberspace. What are the plans of google? gmail, googletalk, and then what?
Here is in interesting piece by Mr. Young, who predicts that Google's efforts will undermine Microsoft and thereby reducing its value. Read on more here:

Seems like everyone has an opinion on this. Both companies are growing and with the exception of search and one or two other things, they do totally different things and have different products. It's fun to play the guessing game. However, I doubt if either company is going to go out of business because of the other.

I heard that google wants to develop a new operating system, which kernel would be based on.. Guess what ? yes, the linux kernel..!
I dunno.. i dont clearly undernstand the GPL, but if i understand it well, then google aint permitted to do so things.. it may distribute in the way as it is, but cant modify, then license it again and sel it for money. Anyway, the chosen kernel, as a base of the Google kernel is 1.1.13 as i heard, and its possible, that that one wasnt GPled yet... i dunno.. please answer..
Ahh, and the most important, the name: the google os' name will be GoOSe... goose ! goose ! google couldnt choose a better name for it.. ehh..
It wont be fully compatible with linux on binaries, but there will be a very powerful emulator for them. Its graphical interface will be a fully customized KDE. I also heard that the developer wont be google. itll be developed by other people and google will buy it, if itll like..
Its possible that the stuff written above isnt true, i just heard, but if it is, what is the cost for a so OS. I think about millions of dollars.. dunno.

Ok, say they didn't charge conumers for the OS in the traditional sense, I don't know if I'm talking rubbish but is there any way they could make money out of it indirectly? Sponsor development and have adverts on the desktop maybe?

I agree with you Wissam. Personally, I dont think they will every become a big rival in their main products. I doubt Microsoft will build a better search engine than Google, and I cant see Google ever making a more succesful OS than Microsoft. They are both so ahead of each other, it would be difficult to see it happening. However, I must say I am very interested in rumours of a Google Web Based OS, it sounds a good idea, and would annoy Microsoft even more, because you need a PC to access everything Google, so Microsoft is helping the rise of Google, indirectly.

I have an alternative theory about Google Vs. Microsoft - I think that Google will begin to make products that Microsoft make and I think that Google's versions will be better.

however, I think that everyone will stick with Microsoft for the following reasons:

Most people still use Hotmail even though Gmail is much better

Most people still use Windows even though Linux is better

Most people still use Internet Explorer even though Firefox is better.

People know the layout of Microsoft and do not want to change - personally, I still use internet explorer and Windows because I know more about them - the only reason I began to use Gmail was because we only recently got broadband and only just got a Hotmail account so it was easy to change.

    Yeah

Everyone knows that Microsoft isn't the best but most people either don't know the alternatives or don't want to switch.

    google is better

First, Microsoft products are full of bugs. GMail supports POP3, and a lot of features that MS never will implement. Maybe the reason tht why many persons use hotmail instead gmail is the MSN Messenger. google release GTalk, but is beta yet, but i think if GTalk grows correctly and not implement unuseful features like Microsoft will beat down the MSN Messenger. in any way google services are better than microsoft services.

    Greetings.

For me both are as good as each other but I clearly see more participation in Microsoft’s Betas because users and developers/program mangers talk to each other in newsgroups not something that really happens with Google.

Also don’t forget there are loads more alternatives than just Google & Microsoft!

So Google products never have bugs?

Microsft products are not perfect, but...none are...

(edit: responding mostly to atmavidya, also few above him - I've had this tab opened too long...)

I think, between Microsoft and Google, Google would win.

...but, above all, Mozilla would win :P

    my take on G.v.sM
simple, Microsoft got a lot (most) of us on the web...and now that we're here, Google, plans to take us on for the ride.
Microsoft has lost the search battle and doubt it'll ever recover.
But google is making the quality of what the web was made for originally, a much better thing, exchanging information.
I think Microsoft, maybe didn't see the bigger picture. They just wanted to make sure their product was in every household and it is (in most).
Google said, great, thanks for letting everybody in, we'll take it from here.
    Lucky guys ($ergey and Larry)
It's a cycle, in the next 10 years, someone will come up with something good as well.

I think that if google tried to create an operating system it would take a lot of their resources. They should create new things, but not a huge task like an OS.

With the kind of coin they have and the new team that's running it...NO WAY would i just sit and develop what i have already.
Gotta expand and that's where they're doing.
That could have been said about their search engine.
"okay, great search engine, let's leave it at that"
There would be no Gmail, GoogleTalk, Picasa, Orkut (sp?), GoogleEarth, etc, etc...

I didn't mean don't do any more expanding...i meant i don't think they should leap into such a big thing like and operating system. I'll edit my post.

Would you stop at an OS if you were google?
With the kind of team you had and the money behind it?
    Honestly...?
