    Google Calendar

    Another one for Google Labs.

    Tuesday, February 22, 2005
I know what Google's going to do next!

I've seen serious traffic on my church's website this month from Googlebots. Last year I added a Calendar to the site using the ical standard, and now the Googlebots are pinging the heck out of the php pages rendering the calendar. We're talking 90% of the site's accesses have been from Google this month.

My prediction is: Google Labs will be releasing a Google Calendar tool soon. You heard it here first.

The fact they are attracted to the ical standard is cool...maybe it can take off with their support.

UPDATE (2/24): Since there seems to be so many folks linking and reading this post, let me add a couple bits:

    1. My guess is that Google Calendar would be a search tool, not a calendar application.
    2. If you are interested in a cool calendar tool, check out Mozilla's Sunbird which can be rendered on the web using SourceForge's PHP based Calendar.
    3. This is just a guess based on traffic on one site. Even if they are working on it, it may never get out of the lab.
    4. Here's the stats I based my prediction on:

thanks, that is an advantage for google!

PS: i was also fascinated by this comment in the said blog:
    At 2:30 AM, Anonymous said…

The Googlebot crawls lots of different types of webpages. Not all of these pages become indexed. Not all of the indexes that google compiles become searchable. Not all of google's searchable indexes make it to an experimental production service (ie Google Labs beta feature.) But it is interesting and thanks for sharing

    Calendar

They must keep pace with Microsoft, so will have one soon. It's the buzz on the blogs again.

    Mesh Calendar from MS.

If they would do it, I think (for a long time actually...) it would be something like Hula project, but centered around Gmail of course.

I am starting to feel that there is nothing Google could put out there I wouldn't love or try. I am always in need of a calendar, and have one or two on the web, but they are not convenient.

Would be thrilling to have a calendar that was tied to my gmail, that I could access anywhere easily and would send me reminders.

I am just grinning thinking about it.

It is good to grow up in this era. Heh.

I have been hoping for this for months!! One of the only good things yahoo has going for it IMO is its email/contacts/calendar integration. Here's to hoping Google picks up the pace and does it soon!! That link(calendar.google.com) is definitly a good sign.

The original post is already 11 months old! Wonder how more "soon" before Google Calender will be unveiled to the public?

Did you all see this? It didn't work for me when I signed in.

At the Google Links page, which Paul Stone found by snooping around the Gmail code, there’s a reference to “CL2”... a service Google calls “A calendar for you and the world.” The URL of this service is google.com/cl2, which at this moment redirects you to the calendar login page (that’s already more than what happens at the calendar.google.com page, which has been around for a while without doing much). Logging in gives no results here except for the usual “invalid request” message.

Oh I don't know...in the past people couldn't imagine, based on technology of their times, what will be possible. We can do that...and at the same time know we won't see it/experience it...

yeah, gCal and gMail would be unbeatable.
iCal is pretty good in fact, but as I seldom use iChat, I couldn't get the reminder messages on time. But with gmail notification, I won't miss gCal notifiers

If they create a calendar then I want it to be synchronisable with various calendar applications on the desktop, whether mac or PC. It's good to have a calendar online but only when it's synched with the gadgets you're using.

I'm speaking about laptops, mp3 players and such. Whoever provides this will get my custom, if not in cash then at least in page views per day or week.

    When?

How about NEVER! I'm really tired of hearing about a product that we all obviously want VERY much and need in our daily lives but they won't release it (unless you work there apparently). I think it's about time to just find another calendar application that works for us and go with it. I wish Google would either release it or get on with life and forget about it. My 2 cents!
