Great question.
Based on my experience, SEO is more of a long-term. Twitter and other media will get you immediate effect, but SEO positioning higher and higher on SERPs will get you consistency.

I have a quesiton, what about other related keywords and variations? 1000 for your exact + ? for everything else? That adds up, isn't it?

I think that there is no better option between the two as you have to employ them both so they could work properly.

Even with SEO, you still have to implement other stuff which would also matter as you should not be just fine with one implementation. What I am trying to say is that though one technique is good already, it would be only an advantage should you decide to work with one more.

Social promotion helps in getting huge traffic and seo is helpful for creating back links.Both are important for website promotion and getting the site ranking in search engine.

Social promotion may be more direct in promoting the website to people. SEO is more directed at search engines before they are able to reach people. Anyway, that is how I look at it.

The only difference between social promotion and SEO work is Seo work takes a long time while social promotion can be done in less time as compared to SEO.

Another thing is that social promotion does not leave a long lasting online footprint while SEO practices usually do.

SMO: Social media optimization is direct traffic driven process but immediate effort with short term basis, where as seo referral with direct traffic with long term result basis. As per my experience I'll suggest SEO.

Social promotion very well for new website because nobody don't know about there site, so it is activity good but always time will not keep remain. SEO is doing work as per as on behalf Google algorithm updates, because Google is changing alternative algorithm values and new techniques will be find seo for website. Social media increase traffic but not long term only limited period but seo is running contiguously. SEO is providing to website back links whose will build bridge for website.

Its depends on your website's theme If you are having an e-commerce site then SEO is best for you. If you are having a site of any band, channel, club etc. in which people takes interest then Social promotion is much better. But for any kind of website you have to the both Search Engine Optimization as well as Social Media Optimization.
