I think it can be done easily.. Bump for you..
I am using Vista. I have tried replacing the built-in search in Vista with GDS by going to default programs in the control panel and setting the search protocol to Google Desktop but that didn't disable Windows Search. It was still running and slowing down my computer horribly when I was trying to work, so I disabled the search indexing service. But now when I do searches in Explorer it gives me a message that searches may be slow in non-indexed locations and the searches do seem slower. Shouldn't Google desktop be taking care of that? When I go to uninstall a program and type in a the name of the program in the search bar it takes a long time to find it. I don't think it is using GDS in that case. And I think the Start menu still uses regular Windows Search. How would I know, and is there a way to make GDS take over everything? Or else, how could I re-enable Windows Search and make sure the index only runs in the background when I am not busy using the computer as it is advertised to supposedly work?
