What Photo editor product should I purhase?

I'm a hobbiest and rarely modify my digital photos but at times I would like to adjust color, brightness, contrast, crop, morph, clean up photos etc.

I have the Adobe Photo Shop starter edition but it doesn't do what I need. I think the Adobe upgrade is expensive for a part time hobbiest. Does anyone have an alternative suggestion?

    Thank you.

I'm using both GIMP and PhotoPlus. The latter is good and easy to use but the downside is that it doesn't support PNG images. If you think Adobe Photoshop would be better suited for you, I suggest that you go for it. Note that there are other ways to obtain it.

Gimp's good, very powerful, and free, but...

beware the documentation...hard to find...hard to download. They've even written a big book about it, too. We tried to read and unnerstand the online stuff, and it wasn't all that easy for us, so before bothering with the package, you might want to try the documentation.

We have Gimp, Adobe Photoshop, and Paintshop Pro. Adobe Photoshop is of course big bucks. Gimp is as powerful and is free. Paintshop Pro is purdy good and not too much...

For basic photo editing, iPhoto is great. It does require that you're on a Mac though.

People have already mentioned The Gimp, which is a pretty decent free alternative.

If you just need some basic tools Photoshop is a bit overkill. That said, there is nothing that beats it. I use both Photoshop and Illustrator almost every day.

For those still reading this thread: a new release of GIMP has just come out. Many improvements. Much faster. On MacOSX: File Open dialog fixed (finally!). Worth the download.

Another graphics package I've found quite useful on MacOSX: Pixelmator. Very reasonable price. Easy to use.
