Yes it is, Google Docs is safe. I read an article before that even Google employees use this feature and we also share the same database with them. So in case you counter any problem with it, I'm sure you're not alone.

Google docs is safe.But,in the past three years since Google Docs launched, several notable security flaws have emerged.

Google Doc is safe to use but as said above you should keep a backup of all your documents in a secondary memory like PD or any CD. So that you may not lost any data.
