Index when I'm not here PLEASE!

How is the index PAUSE controlled? Is there a registry setting or something? Desktop indexes at all the wrong times. I want it to index when I am away from the computer. When I am in full-screen applications i want the darn thing off, as it absolutely kills my gaming experience. I can pause for up to an hour, but that may not be sufficient for to kill a worthy alliance of adversaries or legue of lunatics.

I would be happy to write an applicaton which detected I was in full screen mode and set the pause flag if I knew what the pause flag was.

Any ideas or existing tools out there?
