It displays the past search volume about some keywords and helps you predict the value of some keywords in the coming future.

I think Google trends is the much useful service for those people who actually want to know, what was the search of any particular keyword. It shows total search volume of particular keyword across various regions. Google trends allows to users if they want to compare 2 keywords search graph.

It doesn't show any hot topic, it shows the search graph and its data for the particular keywords and also shows that how search vary in several months. you can also check the which keywords has more searches.

I personally use Google's search trends as topics for my blog. Generally google's trends are hot topics that are most likely to turn hits on my blog. Since I get paid based on the number of unique views I recieve for each blog, it is pretty much essential that my blog topics are hot tickets.
