Hi Google says "Bounce rate is the percentage of single-page visits or visits in which the person left your site from the entrance (landing) page. Use this metric to measure visit quality - a high bounce rate generally indicates that site entrance pages aren't relevant to your visitors."

So ten people visit a page, three leave without going elsewhere, thats a 30% bounce rate right there.

Also important is time on page and if you are hitting your goal conversions.

    Rb = Bounce rate
Tv = Total number of visitors viewing one page only
Te = Total entries to page

Bounce rate can be calculated by divide the total no of visitors who stop there with the total no of visitors who come there and do no stop.

A bounce is calculated by counting the number of times trackPageview is called during a single visit. If trackPageview is called only 1 time during a visit, then that visit will be considered a bounce.

Coolguy just said it. Make sure that the Bounce rate is low and the time spent on the site is high. If you
work to make one better the other one gets better by itself.

The higher bounce rate the less appealing your website is to the visitor. One good tip to decrease bounce rate of your site - put the "continue reading" link to the end of your articles, so that your visitors will have to click through this to read the whole article.

    re: Bounce Rate-

We can calculate the bounce rate from the Google analytics. Because it shows the history of each clicks, time spent on each and every page.

To calculate the bounce rate use

Bounce rate= No.of Visitor view a page /No. of hits on a page

    Thanks

I have a quesiton with bounce rate.
If I only have one page (index.html) that loads single .swf file, and that is the whole website, how can I avoid bounce rate always be 100 percent?

    Thanks in advance.

While you certainly want people to explore your site, there are some situations where a specific page is almost destined to have a high bounce rate. If your site has a lot of content, it's quite possible that a very specific web search will lead a surfer to a page that answers their specific question, negating the need to browse further. For example, if you have a single article about, say, bike repair, they may well read that and be satisfied. They may have no interest in the other topics covered on your site. This seems natural, and not at all bad. On the other hand, EmilyParkinson (above) offers a useful tip about splitting content onto multiple pages.

Assuming that everyone in here that has written a random comment about bounce rate, really cares about it "i really dnt find it accurate and fair." wtf? Bounce rate helps you understand whree you are going wrong. If the page is pathetic, it will have a high bounce rate. Perhaps you can find out where they came from before they landed on this page, is the page title misleading? It is there to help you figure out where the bottlenecks on your site are. It is just one of many stats that the fantastic g analytics gives you for free.
