Cannot switch off google safe search

Hello everyone. Ive been having a problem with google since i purchased a new PC 5 months ago. I can not switch off google safe search no matter what i do. I go into the preferences, i turn off safe filtering but when i go back to search it is still switched on, but once i go back to the preferences it is showing as off. I have tried clearing my cookies, downloading opera instead of using IE7 but nothing seems to work. can someone tell me what to do as im resorting to yahoo at everytime because i have no option although yahoo is miles behind.

it could actually be your server that has a parental controls on it.

I have the same problem. In checking the web there are all kinds of others having the same problem, yet there seems never to be a reasonable, effective answer. The answer here from dave keep suggests it might be the server. I don't see how the server, in my case the ISP server, can reset my preferences. I've followed every bit of advice found in various places, yet my preferences never stick. Surely Google has done some definitive review of this and posted it somewhere.

Um sounds strange have you tried through a proxy server like American Glype Proxy see if you save prferences then?

Dogpile Web Search Home Page is a good serch engine if not.

Thanks Pete. I changed my preferences through the proxy you suggested - no difference. The preferences revert to default when I close and reopen the browser. Again, where is Google in all this?

Ditto: cannot switch off Google SafeSearch...

Until last week, I had been using Google as my main search engine on both XP and VISTA on a dual boot PC.

Mid last week I had a hardware crash which resulted in a replacement motherboard. I also had a new version of McAfee download and update itself on the VISTA boot partition soon after the replacement motherboard.

Now I don't think there were any other changes to either the XP or VISTA boot partitions.

The XP boot partition works normally. I can switch on and off Google Safesearch.

The VISTA boot partition is the one with the problem. I only have McAfee on the VISTA partition and have previously had other problems with McAfee disabling part of it's own suite when it updates itself.

The problem occurs within IE7, Firefox3 and the latest version of Opera in VISTA.

If I have not found a solution within the week. I will be dumping Google for good.

Now that I've been looking at Google related posts I have discovered the type of information that Google stores in it's cookies about my web surfing. I am not happy about this information being stored without my consent, and will be taking action to prevent Google from having access to this information from now on.

So all in all, it could be a welcome problem if it has woken me up to what Google has been up to.

Still it would be good to get a solution for those times when Google could be the most useful tool (with all Google cookies disabled).

    Just some further information.

I logged in as an administrator under VISTA to see if the problem occurs there or not. And it does not, so this is local to a single non-administrator user under VISTA!

    Fixed. McAfee caused problem. Again...

Ah! Sussed it. It was the new version of McAfee after all.

That's the second time McAfee have messed up VISTA on this machine.

The new version has user specific parental controls that are defaulted much tighter than the previous version, and of course only administrators can change these settings. So McAfee was preventing the Google Safesearch from being changed!

You'd think they would at least inform users of changes after installing a newer version. So problem sorted, but gladly I've now moved to Opera which will prevent Google from getting my surfing information for their evil purposes if I use it from now on.

More likely to use Metacrawler or Dogpile until I do a survey of non-Google search engines.

Luap: I don`t use McAfee, rather I use Avast. You are making me think the problem is in its overriding controls. I will disable Avast and see if the changes to my Google preferences stick.

yes or no: is it possible to reset Safesearch to stay off

I am an adult who teaches college-aged adults, and sometimes I use Google to search in areas that Google's "moderate" Safesearch blocks. Plus, I am the only one who uses my home computer, and am opposed to the idea that Google--or anyone else--knows what's best for me to see or not see.
Okay, here is my problem: I reset my GOOGLE search preferences, almost on a daily basis. I change to "Do not filter my search results." However, on an almost-daily basis, it gets re-set back again to the default "Moderate Safesearch" (I've done the cookies thing and it too is short-lived.)
Here is my question: Yes, or No: Is there any way for me to turn off--to change the default GOOGLE search setting to remain OFF? If yes, please tell me how to do it. If no, please tell me if you know of an alternative search engine to GOOGLE that will not keep resetting one's browser to a "safe" search?
    thanks, in advance.

Triffid's problem (original post) received some suggestions. Bob Greene's post (I've quoted) is a somewhat different problem, similar in effect, but quite different in particulars. Bob's question received no replies on this thread. I wonder if I can re-open the thread because I'm interested in it. This is my first time posting to a google forum, incidentally, so it's an experiment to see how useful it might be. So far, no matter what browser I use, google image search default setting is at safesearch: moderate -- every time. Additionally, I have the problem that the safesearch setting link is unresponsive. I suspect that might be because I use a dial-up modem and the browser is so preoccupied with the Herculean task of filling up about 10 pages of thumbnail pictures all filtered at "moderate" setting that it can't pay attention to a request to stop wasting time on that task and re-set itself first to no-filtering, because I'm just going to have to re-do the search that way anyway, assuming I can ever, eventually, get it to notice that I'm trying to adjust the settings. For that reason, being able to re-set the default to stick where I want it to would be a huge time-saver. If it's possible, that is. -- Does anyone know if it is? Thanks
